Where Did the Little Fish Go 2
Hide small toys under paper cups, ask where each one went, and then switch the cups before searching again.
- 18 months
- Quick prep
- At home
- About 5 minutes
Steps
- 1
Prepare two paper cups in different colors or mark them with different symbols. Choose two familiar small toys, such as a car and a fish.
- 2
While your child watches, hide one toy under each cup. Narrate the locations: “The car drove into the red house. The fish swam into the blue house.”
- 3
Ask, “Where is the car?” Let your child point or lift a cup. After they find it, name the location and ask where the other toy is.
- 4
If they choose the wrong cup, say, “The fish isn’t here. Let’s check the other one,” then hide the toys and try again.
- 5
Once the game is familiar, slowly switch the two cups while your child watches and see whether they can continue tracking the fish.
What to notice
- Points to the cup hiding the fish after remembering where it was placed Memory
- Shows you the “little fish” happily after finding it Relationships with Adults
Tips
- Once your baby can easily find the toy under two cups, add a third toy and cup. You can also use identical cups to make the clues less obvious.
Developmental benefits
- Cognitive: Finding a hidden toy helps your child understand that an object still exists when it is out of sight. Each search also exercises short-term memory and strengthens their understanding of object permanence.
