- 1
Add a measuring challenge to an airplane pretend-play game.
- 2
Let your child be the gate agent and explain that each carry-on bag must fit the size limit.
- 3
Make a luggage-sizing board from cardboard. Use your child’s hand as a unit and mark a rectangle three hand-widths by five hand-lengths.
- 4
Place each pretend bag on the board for inspection. If one side extends beyond the outline, the gate agent can say, “It’s too big for carry-on.”
- 5
Send the oversized bag to pretend checked baggage, then inspect another one.
- 6
Invite other family members to line up as passengers with bags in different sizes.
What to notice
- Places each piece of luggage on the “Size Guide” and checks whether it fits Measurement
- Pretends to be a security or check-in worker inspecting luggage Creativity
Tips
- Help your child line up one edge of the luggage with the edge of the size board before counting hand spans. Gaps between hand placements make the measurement inaccurate.
- If they stop after measuring the longest side, ask, “Does the length fit? What about the width?” This reminds them to check both dimensions.
Developmental benefits
- Cognitive: Making a hand-span measuring guide and checking whether luggage crosses its edge helps your child compare sizes and make a judgment from the result.
