Little Bunny’s Big Hug
Read a warm picture book together and follow your child when they turn back to a familiar moment. Repeated pages help reveal that the pictures are connected in a story.
- 18 months
- Quick prep
- At home
- About 5 minutes
Steps
- 1
Choose a warm, simple picture book such as Guess How Much I Love You.
- 2
Begin with the cover. Point to the picture and briefly describe the story: “This is a story about a big bunny who loves a little bunny.”
- 3
Invite your child to open the book. Read from top to bottom and left to right, and act out an engaging moment—for example, stretch your arms wide for “I love you this much.”
- 4
Your child may turn back to a favorite hug. That return can show they remember the scene is on an earlier page, so read it again together.
- 5
If your child points to the picture or pulls your hand and says, “Bunny,” pause and respond: “Yes, the little bunny!”
- 6
Follow their interest and repeat the pages they seek, even if that means visiting the jumping page several times.
What to notice
- Turns back through the book to find a page seen earlier Emergent Literacy
- Hands you the book for help when they cannot find the page Relationships with Adults
Tips
- What looks like random page turning may be a search for a familiar picture. Follow your child’s pace and offer one simple response: “There’s the bunny again!”
Developmental benefits
- Language: Sharing a simple picture book, moving through it in order, and returning to a remembered page helps your child understand how a book is organized and that its pages hold a story.
