Meet New People
In a warm interaction, introduce a new grown-up and repeat the name your child can use for that person.
- 12 months
- No prep needed
- At home
- About 15 minutes
Steps
- 1
When a guest arrives, introduce them to your baby: “This is our neighbor Maya.” When Maya greets your baby, invite her to speak directly to them.
- 2
Use the guest’s name naturally during the visit: “Maya would like to shake your hand,” or “Maya is playing with you.” Repetition helps your baby connect the name with the person.
- 3
Once your baby is more comfortable, ask, “Where is Maya?” and see whether they turn or point.
- 4
If your baby does not find her right away, Maya can wave, say hello, or gently offer a hand.
- 5
When it is time to leave, invite your baby to wave or blow a kiss. If they need help, gently guide the gesture with them.

- Moves closer to you when a guest is unfamiliar Relationships with Adults
Tips
- At this age, your baby may be wary of unfamiliar people and watch them for a while. Do not pressure your baby to interact right away. Let them first observe you talking with the visitor, then invite the visitor to offer a toy or speak gently to your baby. These gradual steps can help your baby feel secure.
Developmental benefits
- Language: Hearing and using a new form of address during a real interaction helps your baby connect the new word with the person it names.
