  1. 1

If your child knows numerals but is not interested in writing them, make a Number-Munching Snake.

  2. 2

Prepare long colored paper strips and a paper snake head. Say, “The snake is hungry for number candy.”

  3. 3

Write numerals such as 1 and 3 on separate strips. Pretend the snake eats each one, then attach the strip behind its head to lengthen the body.

  4. 4

After two pieces, say, “The snake wants number 2, but I can’t find it.” Invite your child to write 2 on a new strip.

  5. 5

Ask which number candy should come next and let your child create more pieces.

  6. 6

If they do not want to write yet, let them feed the existing numbers, then have the hungry snake request another numeral when interest returns.

  • Writes a number from 1 to 10 on each paper strip Counting and Cardinality
  • Attaches each new strip after the previous one to make a chain Fine Motor
  • If your child can comfortably write 1 through 10, extend the challenge to 11 through 20: “The number snake is extra hungry today. It wants more number treats!”
  • If a number is unfamiliar, write it once as a model and invite your child to copy it. Let them make extra cards for numbers they especially enjoy writing.
  • Cognitive: Writing numeral “candies” and attaching them as the snake’s body gives your child playful practice forming numbers in sequence.
  • Movement: Holding a pencil and controlling its movement while writing numbers builds small-muscle strength and hand-eye coordination.
