  1. 1

Once counting is familiar, connect quantities with written numerals from 1 to 5.

  2. 2

Draw a train with five cars and write one target number in each car in mixed order: 3, 1, 5, 2, and 4. Explain, “Each car needs the number of fruits written on it.”

  3. 3

Your child becomes the loader, drawing that many fruits inside each car. If drawing fruit is difficult, circles can stand for apples.

  4. 4

After every car, count the marks together: “One, two, three—does this car have three fruits?”

  5. 5

When the train is full, invite your child to check each car and write or trace the matching numeral again.

  • Cognitive: Drawing a set for each written numeral helps your child connect number symbols with the quantities they represent.
  • Movement: Drawing the fruit or marks gives your child practice controlling a drawing tool with small hand movements.
