- 4½ years
- Quick prep
- At home
- About 15 minutes
Steps
- 1
Draw one to ten apples on ten blank cards. Pretend they are food supplies that small animals must gather before winter.
- 2
Ask another caregiver to reveal two cards at a time and call, “Ready, go!” You and your child decide which card has more food; the first person to choose it keeps the card.
- 3
Some quantities will be easy to compare at a glance. When two look close, count before choosing.
- 4
Slow your own counting when needed so your child has a real chance to compare.
- 5
After each choice, place the cards side by side and check whether the faster player chose the larger quantity.
- 6
At the end, count the apples each player collected and see who wins the winter-food challenge.

Tips
- When you deal the food, choose two dot cards with close quantities to make the comparison more challenging.
- If your child is eager for another round, record who won and play again. Add another set of cards from 6 to 10 when they are ready for larger quantities.
Developmental benefits
- Cognitive: Repeatedly deciding which card has more and counting when the quantities look close helps your child build a reliable comparison of more and less.
- Social/Emotional: Checking that their choice was correct gives your child evidence that their own judgment can be trusted.
