What You’ll Need
- 1
Modeling dough
- 2
modeling tools
- 3
animal-shaped cutters
Step 1
Bunny Orders a Cake
Pretend that you and your child are pastry chefs with an order for Bunny’s birthday cake. Invite your child to roll, pat, and press the dough into a cake base while you make candles beside them.
What to notice
- Pretends to be a chef while making a dough cake Imitation and Symbolic Representation and Play
- Rolls, pats, or presses the modeling dough Fine Motor
Tips
- Begin with the part that needs no tool. Your child can shape the simple cake base while you make the smaller candles.
- Name the action—“Roll it,” “Press it”—and demonstrate if your child is unsure how to begin.
- Work slowly enough for your child to stay alongside you. If the cake base is finished quickly, invite them to try a candle too.
Step 2
Add the Frosting Layer
Explain that the pretend frosting needs to be rolled flat and cut. While your child uses one tool to flatten the dough, offer another, such as a rolling pin, and compare which feels easier to control.
What to notice
- Tries more than one tool, such as a roller or rolling pin, to flatten the dough Reasoning and Problem-Solving
- Uses a toy dough knife to cut the dough Fine Motor
Tips
- If the toy dough knife is difficult to control, guide your child’s hand through the cutting motion.
- An uneven edge can look like frosting dripping down the cake.
- Ask about the results: “Which tool made it flatter? Which one was easier to use?”
Step 3
Invite the Animal Guests
Flatten another piece of dough, then let your child press animal cutters into it and lift out the shapes. Arrange Bunny, the cake, and all the animal guests for a pretend birthday celebration.
What to notice
- Presses an animal cutter into the dough Fine Motor
- Identifies the animal represented by a cutter Imitation and Symbolic Representation and Play
Tips
- As each animal appears, ask, “Who came to the party?” Naming the guests can extend both the story and the conversation.
