Preparation
What You’ll Need
- 1
A farm-themed lift-the-flap book or similar hook-and-loop activity book
Step 1
Off We Go in the Tractor!
Open the farm lift-the-flap book and bring the pictures into the interaction. At a tractor, move your baby’s hands as if you are driving together. When the page becomes an action they can join, they may be more eager to keep looking and turning.
What to notice
- Points to the lamb in the book and imitates its “baa” while looking with you Emergent Literacy
- Laughs while you guide their hand in pretend driving Relationships with Adults
Tips
- Use an animated voice and big gestures to draw your baby into the story. Add a tractor noise or copy the sounds of the farm animals.
- Babies at this age cannot read independently. Your voice, movements, and expressions help your baby understand what the pictures and actions mean.
Step 2
What’s Hiding Under the Flap?
The book has lots of interactive features to discover. If your baby misses one, point to a flap or movable piece—such as the hen’s wing—and give them time to explore it. Once your baby begins to interact with it, build the story around what they found and talk about the picture together.
What to notice
- Finds an interactive feature in the book after you point it out Emergent Literacy
- Pinches the hen’s wing flap and lifts it Fine Motor
Tips
- You do not need to show your baby how each interactive feature works right away. Give them time to lift, pull, and look on their own.
- If your baby wants to explore the same flap or movable piece again and again, stay on that page and follow their interest.
Step 3
Vegetable Friends on the Farm
When a page shows something your baby knows, connect it with everyday life. On the farm page, invite your baby to “pick” a vegetable, then talk about which vegetables your family has eaten and which ones they like.
What to notice
- Reaches for the pumpkin piece after hearing you say “pumpkin” Vocabulary
- Places the vegetable sticker on the hook-and-loop patch Fine Motor
Tips
- Connecting the book with familiar foods and experiences helps your baby understand and remember what they see on the page.
- Whatever your baby picks, follow their choice: “That’s a pumpkin. You like pumpkin.” “We saw corn like this at the store!”
