Dinosaur Store DIY
Stock a dinosaur shop by choosing favorite eggs from an assortment of colors, sizes, and patterns.
- 3½ years
- Quick prep
- At home
- About 15 minutes
Steps
- 1
Imagine a shop your child would like to own, with the little shopkeeper choosing both the theme and the products.
- 2
Ask whether it will be an ice-cream shop, toy shop, dinosaur shop, or something else. As you draw the storefront, wonder, “A dinosaur shop—did you choose that because you like dinosaurs?”
- 3
Draw dinosaur eggs in different sizes, colors, and patterns and ask which ones belong in the shop.
- 4
If your child chooses the largest egg with red dots, ask what mattered most: its size, the color red, or the dot pattern.
- 5
Cut out the chosen eggs and display them in the paper storefront, then keep selecting new merchandise together.
What to notice
- Names something they like or explains why they chose it Sense of Identity and Belonging
- Explains a choice in a clear, logically connected way Communicating and Speaking
Tips
- There is no right answer when your child explains a preference. Even if the reason surprises you, listen and accept it so they feel comfortable expressing a choice.
- If your child wants to draw the shop or dinosaur eggs, hand over the pencil and let their pictures show what they like.
Developmental benefits
- Social/Emotional: Choosing a pretend shop theme and explaining which products belong there helps your child identify and communicate their own interests and preferences.
