Nature Collage Outdoors
Take a sticky art board outdoors and let your child arrange leaves, petals, and twigs into an original nature collage.
- 2½ years
- Some prep
- Outdoors
- About 15 minutes
Steps
- 1
Have you ever painted with nature? Take a board outdoors and cover its surface with double-sided tape so it is sticky and ready for a nature creation.
- 2
Place a few leaves on the board to make a simple pattern and catch your child’s interest.
- 3
Look around together for natural materials on the ground, such as fallen leaves, petals, small twigs, or grass.
- 4
Let your child arrange and stick the finds wherever they choose. Let them decide where each piece goes and how the collage takes shape.
- 5
If your child suddenly goes searching for another material, follow the exploration. You can add pieces too and make it a shared creation.
- 6
When your child pauses, look at the collage together. Ask what they added, which materials they used, and what they were imagining.
What to notice
- Arranges natural materials into a picture of their own Creativity
- Sticks collected materials onto the board Fine Motor
Tips
- If your child is unsure how to begin, ask, “Want to try a flower?” A question leaves more room for their own idea than a direction.
- Bring a few lightweight paper scraps or stickers in case natural materials are hard to find.
Developmental benefits
- Cognitive: Combining natural materials freely lets your child experience the joy of creating something new and explore ideas of their own.
- Movement: Picking up small leaves and petals, turning the wrist, and placing each piece on the board builds fine-motor control.
