Pull the Bead Chain
Place a long bead chain partly inside a container so your baby can reach, pull, and discover how using the other hand keeps the action going.
- 9 months
- Quick prep
- At home
- About 5 minutes
Steps
- 1
Place a long bead chain in an open container with one short section visible. Move it so it makes a sound and draws your baby’s attention.
- 2
When your baby grasps and pulls, the chain may be too long to remove in one motion.
- 3
To continue, they may transfer it to the other hand, reach forward again, or alternate hands.
- 4
If your baby does not switch hands, let them keep exploring without directing the movement.
- 5
At other times, offer an easy-to-grasp toy such as linked wooden rings or a grasping ball and let your baby transfer it from one hand to the other.
What to notice
- Passes the bead chain from one hand to the other Fine Motor
- Grasps the bead chain and shakes it to make a clattering sound Exploration and Discovery
Tips
- Do not direct your baby to switch hands. Grasping, pulling, shaking, or transferring the chain all give both hands opportunities to practice #PMP-FiM.
