Railway Challenge
Build a track, become the railway safety officer, and solve each surprise so the train can reach the end safely.
- 4½ years
- Quick prep
- At home
- About 15 minutes
Steps
- 1
Build a track, start the train, and invite your child to become the railway safety officer.
- 2
Create a pretend emergency along the route and ask your child to find a solution.
- 3
For example, place a piglet on the track: “The train is getting close to the piglet. What can we do?”
- 4
Let your child propose and try an idea, such as moving the piglet or stopping the train. Ask, “Why did you choose that?” and “What do you think will happen?”
- 5
Occasionally add a constraint: “The train is too close to move the piglet first. What else could work?” Give your child time to adjust the plan.
- 6
If the attempt does not work and the train bumps the piglet, continue from the new problem. Bring in a crane, tow truck, or ambulance and invent another solution together.
