Steps
- 1
Make four word cards labeled fast, very fast, super-fast, and lightning-fast. Tell your child, ‘Today we’re going to find the fastest word!’
- 2
Lay out the cards and read each phrase together. Act out the speeds, getting quicker and more dramatic as you move from fast to lightning-fast. Help your child notice that all four phrases describe speed, but with different intensity.
- 3
Turn the cards facedown and mix them up. Take turns drawing a card and moving at the speed it names. Compare your cards: Which is faster? How much faster?
- 4
After each turn, ask questions such as, ‘Who was faster that time?’ or ‘Were you a little faster or much faster?’ Invite your child to explain the difference in their own words.
- 5
Finish with a short race. Before you start, ask, ‘Which speed will you choose—super-fast or lightning-fast?’
