Colorful Duckling Patterns
A simple coloring game turns a row of ducklings into a repeating color pattern for your child to notice and extend.
- 3½ years
- Quick prep
- At home
- About 15 minutes
Steps
- 1
Prepare two sheets with several rows of blank ducklings, such as a 4-by-4 grid, and a few colored pencils or markers.
- 2
Each of you takes one sheet and begins coloring.
- 3
Let your child color their ducklings however they like. On your sheet, color only the first row in a fixed pattern, such as alternating yellow and blue.
- 4
When your child finishes their own picture, ask, “Could you finish my ducklings too? Look—mine go yellow, blue, yellow, blue.”
- 5
As they work, ask, “What comes after yellow?” or offer a clue: “After blue, is yellow next?” Let your child continue the pattern.
- 6
Place the finished duckling grids side by side and admire the two different creations.
What to notice
- Continues coloring the ducks in the pattern you started Operations and Algebraic Thinking
- Colors in the duckling with a marker Fine Motor
Tips
- Let your child finish their own free creation before inviting them to continue your pattern. This keeps the discovery playful instead of turning it into a lesson too early.
- You can print a duckling grid or draw one yourself.
Developmental benefits
- Cognitive: Continuing the color sequence on the remaining ducklings helps your child notice and extend a simple repeating pattern.
- Movement: Coloring each small shape gives your child repeated practice controlling a drawing tool with coordinated hand and eye movements.
